  Title:Advanced Dental Radiography
  Long Title:Advanced Dental Radiography
  Course Description:Includes theory and techniques of exposing intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs on adults, children, edentulous, and special needs patients. Covers dental anatomy radiographic interpretation and aseptic techniques. Enables the student to expose radiographs on the x-ray mannequin and patients. Students must be a minimum of eighteen years of age.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Describe and demonstrate general safety practices in the classroom, x-ray exposure room, and darkroom.
 II.     Describe and demonstrate safety practices using various dental x-ray instruments and equipment.
 III.    Discuss each of the types of dental radiographic examinations and state the reasons for their use.
 IV.     State the diagnostic criteria for intra-oral radiographs.
 V.      State and discuss the rationale for prescribing dental radiographs.
 VI.     Identify and discuss dental radiographic exposure errors.
 VII.    State and discuss the corrections for dental radiographic exposure errors.
 VIII.   Identify and discuss dental radiographic technique errors.
 IX.     State and discuss the corrections for dental radiographic technique errors.
 X       Discuss the concepts, principles, and rules relating to the bisecting technique.
 XI.     List the step-by-step procedures for patient preparation, equipment preparation, and film placement for the bisecting technique.
 XII.    Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for the bisecting technique.
 XIII.   Identify normal anatomic landmarks and normal tooth anatomy on dental radiographs.
 XIV.    State and discuss the concepts and guidelines for radiographic interpretation.
 XV.     Identify dental caries, periodontal disease, trauma, and pulpal and periapical lesions on radiographs.
 XVI.    Discuss the concepts of panoramic radiography.
 XVII.   List and discuss the step-by-step procedures for panoramic radiography including patient preparation and equipment preparation.
 XVIII.  Identify and discuss common errors associated with panoramic radiography.
 XIX.    Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of panoramic radiography.
 XX      Discuss the concepts of extra-oral radiography.
 XXI.    List and discuss the step-by-step procedures for various extra-oral radiographic projections.
 XXII.   Discuss the concepts of occlusal radiography.
 XXIII.  List and discuss the step-by-step procedures for occlusal radiography.
 XXIV.   Demonstrate the ability to make occlusal radiographic surveys on typodonts.
 XXV.    List and discuss the step-by-step procedures for localization techniques.
 XXVI.   Demonstrate the ability to localization procedures on typodonts.
 XXVII.  Discuss the techniques available to make radiographic exposures on patients with special needs.
 XXVIII. Discuss the concepts of patient relations.
 XXIX.   Discuss the concepts of interpersonal skills including communication and facilitation skills.
 XXX     Discuss the concepts, types, and advantages and disadvantages of digital imaging.
 XXXI.   List and discuss the types of digital imaging systems.
 XXXII.  Demonstrate the paralleling technique by making full mouth radiographic surveys on patients.
 XXXIII. Demonstrate the bisecting technique by making full mouth radiographic surveys on patients.
 XXXIV.  Demonstrate the ability to place dental x-ray films for edentulous, partially edentulous, and endodontic patients.
 XXXV.   Demonstrate the ability to mount edentulous and partially edentulous radiographs.
