Course Description: | Covers the concept of clinical chairside assisting. Emphasis will be placed on chairside assisting in dental restorative procedures, coronal polishing skills, fluoride application, and hands-on manipulation of dental materials in a preclinical and/or laboratory situation. Student learning will center on enhancing student ‘s procedure anticipation, dexterity, skills of chairside assisting, and dental laboratory procedures prior to clinical internship experiences. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
A. Demonstrate infection control procedures and safety practices in the laboratory and dental clinic.
B. Describe and demonstrate safety practices using materials, instruments, and equipment in the laboratory.
C. Apply correct armamentarium measurements and procedures in manipulation of restorative and laboratory dental materials.
D. Imprint an alginate impression on a typodont model and on a student patient to demonstrate adequate skills obtaining an acceptable maxillary and mandibular alginate impressions for diagnostic casts.
E. Describe and demonstrate the procedure for obtaining a wax-bite registration.
F. List the uses of various dental waxes.
G. List and describe the uses and manipulation of gypsum products to determine the recommended water-powder ratios for model plaster, dental stone and high-strength dental stone.
H. Demonstrate pouring, trimming, finishing, polishing and labeling maxillary and mandibular diagnostic casts according to task performance criteria.
I. Describe the steps in enamel bonding.
J. Demonstrate the techniques for dispensing, handling, and applying tooth conditioning materials.
K. Demonstrate the techniques for dispensing, handling, and curing composite restorative material.
L. List the types, components, and physical properties of dental abrasives and dentifrices.
M. Demonstrate rubber dam isolation techniques to clinical competency.
N. Demonstrate manipulation of light-cured and self-cured composite restorative material.
O. Assist in a composite restoration on a typodont model with light-cured and self-cured composite material.
P. Demonstrate the manipulation of amalgam restorative material and assist in the procedure of an amalgam restoration on a typodont model.
Q. Demonstrate the placement and removal of a matrix band and wedge on a typodont model.
R. Demonstrate the fabrication and finishing of (at least one) maxillary and/or mandibular acrylic custom tray, using proper manipulation of the resin materials on an edentulous model.
S. Demonstrate the preparation and manipulation of at least two types of elastomeric impression materials.
T. Demonstrate assisting during the two-step impression technique, using elastomeric impression materials.
U. Demonstrate taking a silicone occlusal bite registration (specific method to be determined by instructor - example: open bite, closed bite or tray).
V. Demonstrate the fabrication of athletic mouth guard and custom bleaching tray.
W. Demonstrate safety factors and procedures routinely during manipulation and chairside activities with dental materials.
X. Demonstrate manipulation and fabrication of a provisional crown and/or bridge.
Y. Demonstrate patient education in oral hygiene instruction.
Z. Demonstrate coronal polishing and fluoride application.
