  Course Description:Includes in depth study of oral defects, microorganisms and their effects on the human body with recognition and identification of pathological condition that most frequently occur orally. Emphasizes pharmacology and the drugs used in the prevention and treatment of pain and conditions of the oral cavity. Focuses on laboratory experiences and the procedures involved with local anesthesia with emphasis on the knowledge and application of nitrous oxide administration in the dental office. Upon completion, the student is eligible to administer Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen having met the requirements of the Colorado State Practice Act Rule XVII. Certificate in Nitrous Oxide Administration is given.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Explain the body defenses against disease transmission through the function of the immune system. (I)
 II.     Identify factors to prevent disease transmission in the dental office. (I)
 III.    Give examples on how pathological conditions in the mouth can impact the patient¿s general health and dental treatment. (II)
 IV.     Compare four classifications of oral lesions. (II)
 V.      Explain treatments applicable to common oral lesions. (II)
 VI.     List the major drugs covered by the Controlled Substance Act. (III)
 VII.    List terminology associated with drug effects, substance abuse and the major routes of drug administration. (III)
 VIII.   Identify four stages of anesthesia. (IV)
 IX.     Evaluate the procedure of nitrous oxide sedation administration in regards to the requirements of the Colorado State Practice Act. (IV)
 X       Demonstrate the administration of nitrous oxide and oxygen under the supervision of a licensed dentist in a clinical setting. (IV)
 XI.     Demonstrate patient management assessment/documentation using nitrous oxide sedation methods. (IV)
 XII.    Demonstrate proper use of nitrous oxide and oxygen equipment. (IV)
