  Course Description:Includes survey of human anatomy and physiology, the structure of the head and neck as applied to dental assisting, the function of the maxilla and mandible, processes, foramen, sutures, and major nerve and blood supply.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Recognize the various organ systems of the body and their general functions
 II.     Identify terms as they relate to anatomical positioning
 III.    Identify the types and general characteristics of connective tissue found in the head and neck
 IV.     Identify the structure of bone tissue
 V.      Identify the bones that make up the skull.
 VI.     Describe in detail the various parts and landmarks of the maxilla and mandible
 VII.    Discuss the relationship of teeth to various structures within the maxilla and mandible and the possible significance of that relationship during treatment.
 VIII.   Recognize the normal structure and functioning of the TMJ.
 IX.     Gain a level of familiarity relating to pathological function of the TMJ.
 X       Name three types of muscle tissue and identify their function and location in the body.
 XI.     Define the terms origin, insertion, and action as they relate to muscles.
 XII.    List the muscles of the head and neck and describe their functions as they relate to mastication, swallowing, phonation and facial expression.
 XIII.   Describe the function of the heart, arteries, veins and capillaries.
 XIV.    Identify the major arteries and veins of the head and neck.
 XV.     Trace blood flow through the heart to all areas of the oral cavity and back again to the heart.
 XVI.    Discuss the importance of the location of the blood vessels during the administration of local anesthetic.
 XVII.   Identify the main parts of the human nervous system and identify the functions of sensory and motor nerves
 XVIII.  Name the twelve cranial nerves and their functions.
 XIX.    Name the specific branches of the Trigeminal nerve and the areas of the face, teeth and oral cavity with which each are associated.
 XX      Describe the function and location of salivary glands and discuss their importance in the oral cavity
 XXI.    Identify the major lymph nodes of the head and neck and discuss their role with respect to infections of the oral cavity.
