Course Description: | Teaches students to recognize, identify, and perform intermediate East Coast and West Coast swing including Lindy Hop movements to various types of music. Students will be able to dance with or without a partner. This course is a continuation of DAN 126 – East/West Coast Swing I, and trains students for recreational and/or pre-professional dance. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Recognize rhythms in music that relate directly to swing dance.
2. Adapt intermediate footwork and body positioning individually in order to build upon techniques learned in the previous class.
3. Continue to build confidence and self-esteem through working with multiple dance partners.
4. Construct complex connections with a partner on the dance floor using frame; body, hand, and head placement; and footwork.
5. Alternate skillfully between “Leader” and “Follower” roles in swing dance.
6. Demonstrate dance etiquette by becoming comfortable and polite with fellow dancers, and communicating on and off the dance floor.
7. Attend dances outside of the studio with confidence and competence.
8. Dance freestyle East Coast and West Coast swing, including Lindy Hop, to appropriate music with creativity and improvisation.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Introduction
A. Perform intermediate footwork for East Coast and West Coast swing, including Lindy Hop, while keeping rhythm with the music.
B. Demonstrate dance footwork while facing a partner and keeping rhythm with the music.
C. Begin a dance with an introduction and end with a variety of dips.
II. Build Connection
A. Explore tension and release dynamics between “Leader” and “Follower.”
B. Concentrate on and deepen awareness of correct dance, hand, foot, and frame positions.
III. Dance patterns
A. Execute more complex swing dance patterns, slowly at first and then increasing with speed of music.
B. Explore various hand holds such as handshake, two-hand, single-hand, and open.
IV. Amalgamations
A. Combine dance patterns into continuous movement, allowing the student to dance for a longer period of time while performing a variety of moves.
B. Encourage students to use freestyle combinations and creativity in order to explore different amalgamations that are unique to their own dance style.
V. Choreography
A. Design and perform set choreography to specific music.
B. Practice memorized choreography to be performed at social gatherings and events.
