  Course Description:Teaches students to recognize, identify, and perform basic East Coast and West Coast swing dance movements utilizing a variety of music styles for recreational and/or pre-professional dance.

 STANDARD COMPENCIES:
 
 1. Recognize basic rhythms in music that relate directly to swing dance.
 2. Develop basic footwork individually in order to build a solid understanding of how to dance with a partner.
 3. Demonstrate growth in confidence and self-esteem through working with various partners.
 4. Connect with a partner on the dance floor using a dance connection built with frame, eye contact, shoulder placement, head position, and footwork.
 5. Perform basic movements that require a “Leader” and a “Follower.”
 6. Demonstrate dance etiquette by becoming comfortable and polite with fellow dancers, and communicating on and off of the dance floor.
 7. Attend dances outside of the studio with confidence.
 8. Dance basic freestyle East Coast and West Coast swing to appropriate music while using creativity and improvisation.


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 I. Introduction
 A. Perform basic footwork for East Coast swing and West Coast swing while keeping rhythm with the music.
 B. Dance basic footwork while facing a partner and keeping rhythm with the music.
 C. Begin a dance with an introduction and conclude with a dip.
 II. Build Connection
 A. Explore dynamics between “Leader” and “Follower.”
 B. Concentrate on and build correct dance, hand, foot, and frame positions.
 III. Dance Patterns
 A. Introduce basic under-the-arm turns while encouraging couples to stay on the same musical beat.
 B. Explore various dance holds such as closed position, open position, sweetheart, tandem, and side-by-side.
 C. Explore various hand holds such as handshake, two-hand, single-hand, and open.
 IV. Amalgamations
 A. Combine dance patterns into continuous movement in order to dance for a longer period of time.
 B. Encourage students to use freestyle combinations and creativity in order to explore different amalgamations that are unique.
 V. Choreography
 A. Execute a set piece of choreography to a chosen piece of music.
 B. Practice memorized choreography for social gatherings and events.
