Course Description: | Designed for biology and health science majors. Surveys microorganisms with an emphasis on their structure, development, physiology, classification, and identification. Includes microbial diversity, functional anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, ecology, and disease. Mandatory hands-on laboratory experience covers sterile technique, microscopy, culture procedures, and biochemical and genetic analysis. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Demonstrate an understanding of microbial cell biology, microbial genetics, interactions and impact of microorganisms and humans, and the interactions and impact of microorganisms in the environment.
II. Demonstrate an understanding and utilization of microscopy (various types), slide sample preparation, aseptic techniques, media and test preparation, serial dilutions, and other standard microbiology laboratory equipment.
III. Demonstrate an increased skill level in cognitive processes, analytical skills, communication skills, and interpersonal and citizenry skills as applied to microbiological topics and experiments.
IV. Demonstrate ability to explain and practice safe microbiological, protective, and emergency procedures.
