Course Description: | Provides an enhanced understanding of assessment and treatment skills in a remote challenging environment to currently certified EMS professionals at the paramedic or higher level. Updates include the following four specific areas of prehospital emergency care: trauma, medical, Advanced Life Support (ALS) and elective topics focused on ancillary issues in EMS. Successful students will receive Certification of Proficiency and ACLS recertification may be offered as an option. |

REQUIRED COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Demonstrate long-term medical care at the advanced life support level.
2. Develop search and rescue operation skills while practicing advanced life support skills.
3. Demonstrate leadership in managing wilderness emergencies while practicing advanced life support skills.
4. Assess and properly treat ill and/or injured individuals in emergent and non-emergent situations.
5. Discuss the physical differences between children and adults.
6. Explain the assessment and treatment difference between children and adults.
7. Interpret electrocardiograms.
8. Describe the procedures for childbirth.
9. Discuss medical, legal and ethical issues in emergency medical services.

Note: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or recertification does not accompany this course and must be completed concomitant with EMS 262 for paramedic recertification as indicated by the National Registry of EMTs and the State of Colorado, EMS Division.
