  Long Title:Paramedic Special Considerations
  Course Description:Introduces the paramedic student to concepts in assessing and meeting the emergency care needs of the neonate, pediatric, geriatric and special needs patient. This course focuses on epidemiology, pathophysiology, assessment and treatment of these patient groups. Common medical and traumatic presentations are addressed. Relevant psychosocial and ethno cultural concepts and legal and ethical implications are integrated throughout.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 1. Identify unique anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology of special populations, to including Neonatal, Pediatric, Geriatrics, the Challenged Patient, and the Chronic Care patient.
 2. Describe the appropriate airway management indications and contraindications for each special population group.
 3. Determine appropriate pharmacological interventions for each special population. PeRform the appropriate assessment, develop a treatment plan and manage a variety of simulated emergencies in special populations.
 4. Describe epidemiology and the psychosocial impact in emergency care and treatment of special populations.
 5. Recognize and describe reporting of abuse and neglect in the special populations.
 6. Describe end of life care and considerations.
 7. Demonstrate understanding of ambulance operations, including local and state requirements of ambulance agencies
 8. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of air medical transport
 9. Discuss strategies to ensure safe operation of an ambulance.
 10. Describe the functional components and identify the role of EMS in a disaster response.
 11. Demonstrate a system of initial triage in a simulated environment.
 12. Explain the risks, consequences, and rescue awareness considerations associated with rescues in moving and flat water.
 13. Explain the risks, consequences, and rescue awareness considerations associated with rescues from motor vehicles.
 14. Explain the risks, consequences, and rescue awareness considerations associated with rescues from confined spaces.
 15. Demonstrate knowledge of hazardous materials response at an Awareness level.
