  Title:AEMT Special Considerations
  Long Title:Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Special Considerations
  Course Description:Introduces the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) student to the fundamental knowledge of growth, development and aging considerations in the emergency patient. The student will learn to use assessment findings to provide basic and selected advanced emergency care and transportation for a patient with special needs. These include the obstetric patient, neonatal patient, pediatric patient, geriatric patient, and patients with special challenges. Learners will apply this knowledge to patient assessment and the development of a treatment plan in a simulated setting. This course also provides an overview of the principles of safe ground ambulance operations, incident management, multiple casualty incidents, air medical responses, vehicle extrication, hazardous material awareness and terrorism and disaster response. Learners will apply critical thinking skills to ensuring the safety of a scene and a plan for safe patient care and transportation.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 Special Patient Populations:
 • Identify the anatomy and physiology of reproduction and the changes that occur in normal pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum.
 • Identify selected common complications during all phases of pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum and of the newborn. Explain common pregnancy and delivery complications and their treatment.
 • Demonstrate a variety of deliveries utilizing simulated scenarios.
 • Demonstrate prehospital care of the normal newborn and those with common complications.
 • Demonstrate knowledge of developmentally appropriate prehospital care of the pediatric patient and family.
 • Explain the signs/symptoms and treatment for common conditions of the pediatric patient.
 • Demonstrate critical thinking skills related to care of the child and family.
 • Recognize the physiological, developmental and psychosocial changes of the aging process.
 • Develop a treatment plan for the geriatric patient with consideration of the physiological changes related to aging.
 • Recognize the signs of abuse and neglect and explain the prehospital providers role in the reporting of those crimes.
 • Explain the needs of various patients with special challenges.
 • Develop plans for the care and transportation of patients with special needs.
 EMS Operations:
 • Demonstrate critical thinking skills in the recognition of EMS operations safety dilemmas and develop a plan for resolution.
 • Explain the AEMTs role in the incident management system.
 • Explain the AEMTs role in a multiple casualty incident.
 • Recognize the safety implications related to air medical operation and explain how to ensure EMS personnel and patient safety during air medical operations.
 • Recognize the safety implications of vehicle extrication and explain how to ensure EMS personnel and patient safety during extrication.
 • Recognize a hazardous material scene.
 • Obtain certification in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response- First Responder awareness level.
 • Understand the risks and responsibilities of operating on the scene of a natural or man-made disaster.
