  Course Description:Focuses on the foundational elements of music theory. The course will cover clef reading, pitch and rhythmic notation, intervals, scales, key signatures, triads and diatonic chords, and an introduction to ear training and sight singing. The course will help beginning music students, including those who have limited background reading music notation and understanding the fundamentals of music theory.

 REQUIRED COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 1.  Identify basic elements of music notation, including clefs, pitch, rhythm, and meter.
 2.  Use written and aural skills to explain diatonic and non-diatonic scales.
 3.  Identify major and minor key signatures.
 4.  Identify melodic intervals using written and aural skills.
 5.  Construct triads in four qualities (major, minor, augmented, diminished) and dominant seventh (V7) chords in any key.
 6.  Build diatonic triads in major and minor keys.
 7.  Analyze basic chord progressions and cadences using chord symbols.
 8.  Create chord progressions and harmonize folk/lead sheet melodies utilizing basic principles of harmony.
 9.  Demonstrate beginning level melodic and rhythmic dictation skills.
 10. Demonstrate sight singing skills using solfege for short melodic sequences in stepwise motion.

 V. Intervals
 VI. Triads and chord qualities
         A. Major, minor, augmented, diminished, and dominant seventh (V7) chords
 VII. Chord symbols
         A.  Macro and popular chord symbols
 VIII. Harmonization and lead sheet notation
 IX. Diatonic triads in major and minor keys and introduction to Roman numeral analysis
 X. Principles of harmonization and chord progression
